Yo-yo, yo-yo. This is a hot new mix from me, DJ Mos Wan Ted aka Johnny Disaster aka Birth Name aka Dump Truck aka Listen Up. It was inspired by SXSW 2008, L.A. “new punk” scene, and feeling, speaking, and acting like a bad-ass, but with the intentions of overly respecting everyone you may come in contact with. This is something your children will be asking you about in the future, so don’t put yourself in the position of being embarrassed by answering, “Oh well, I saw the link to download it, but at the time I was thinking about all the homework I had to get done, and I missed out.” Besides your internet bill, this is totally FREE. Be a go getter and get going!

Exploding out of Monterrey, Mexico with Technicolor blasts of punk rock cheerleader energy, Selma Oxor are the kind of musical mixing pot that only Latin America can pull off. Combining violent punk riffs, demented drum machine pounding, and hyperactive female vocals that masterfully straddle the silly/sexy divide, the three young women two young women and lone male of Selma Oxor have moved into the space between Sonic Youth and Spank Rock and made it their musical playground – a place where detuned, Spanish language Beyonce covers and neon odes to marijuana are par for the course.

I recently had a cybersitdown with the amazing illustrator Julia Sonmi Heglund. She is an incredibly talented lady who draws magical creatures and super psychedelic doodles while residing in Madison, Wisconsin. You can find several of her rad tshirt designs at Threadless. Besides drawing, making, and thrifting Julia also creates music with her boyfriend under the moniker Sonmi. She had many good things to say.

Here’s today’s mix coming a little late in the day. I’ve had a busy week trying to catch up after my trip to LA
Today’s micromix features Dr. Dog’s opener from their new album “Fate.” Followed by a great track from Jeffrey Lewis (who put on quite a show on campus grounds at SXSW). Then comes a shining gem from Department of Eagles (Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear). Memory Cassette is a new discovery for me. Totally hazy and delicious! The mix ends with a haunting lo-fi journey by Grouper.

Dr. Dog – “The Breeze”
Jeffrey Lewis – “End Result”
Department of Eagles – “No One Does It Like You”
Memory Cassette – “Listen To The Vacuum”
Grouper – “Invisible”

I had a chance to talk with the lovely Jana Hunter recently for an article I was working on. You can read the piece here, but I saved some extra tidbits for the Porch.
First, some MP3s:
Jana Hunter – “Farm, Ca.”
Jana Hunter – “Babies”
The Porch: What kinds of things inspire you?
Jana Hunter: Really, other people’s music inspires me a lot. Also, new equipment. You know when you get a new piece of equipment and you spend hours and weeks playing with it. Pretty much any really inspiring work, not just music. And major life events too.

Is it a coincidence that James Jackson Toth (formerly Wooden Wand) and I both have AOL email accounts? Is it a coincidence that his favorite Sun City Girls’ album is titled Torch of the Mystics? Is it a coincidence that his favorite album of his is Second Attention, which just so happens to be my favorite as well. I think not, these are no mere coincidences, his presence on our Porch was predestined by fate. When we chatted via cell-phones, James was somewhere between Buffalo, New York and Bloomington, Indiana, touring for his new album Waiting In Vain, out now on Rykodisc. In Toth’s own words, Waiting In Vain is “kind of about temptation and redemption, and the varying ways you can view these things.” He told me he was not wearing his seat belt, and yes he was driving while talking on his cell-phone. More importantly James does not wear his seat belt on the highway of life, traffic laws are like your mother’s precautions, and you alas are not your own mother.

When I got an e-mail from Jason describing his “Electronic based – hiphop, dance, and funk - some of it just plain weird” project h/int, I was fully prepared to hate it. But once I started playing his incredibly earnest, strangely infectious tracks, I knew I had to know more. After my interview with Fuller, I’m still not quite sure what to think, but I do know that he is out there, producing music he loves, and trying to spread the word. What more can you ask of someone?
